New Zealand is a country of diversity. It offers something for everyone. From food, nature, wildlife, unique sounds and wine, the county has also attracted sports from its unique landscaping, which offers great thrill in challenges. The Buller Marathon is one such sport that has been held in New Zealand for years attracting multiple participants to be part of the enduring activity.

What is the Buller Gorge Marathon?

The Buller marathon is a yearly marathon event held in the little town of Westport. The name of the marathon was
inspired by River Buller, which created a deep canyon or gorge through the heavily wooded area. The race, which starts at Hawks Crag, follows an asphalt street next to the river and heading up the gorge. Berlin’s hotel is the turning point, down the scenic, undulating Buller Gorge Highway and ends at Victoria Square at the City Center of Westport.

There is also a half marathon that features a one- way run from Ohika-iti River Bridge to Victoria square in Westport. There have been further introductions of a four-person relay run during the event.

Brief History

Local harriers tried the course years ago and picked February for the perfect month since it was the driest month of the year, which has been the trend to date. Since it’s commenced, there have been significant improvements in the activity that have made it better and bigger, attracting a loyal following and placing New Zealand on the map for its success.

Taking Part in the Marathon

Participants desiring to be part of the event are given a scheduled time to register at the event’s official website, which gives the organizing team adequate time to do effective planning. They are required to go through adequate preparation and gather sufficient knowledge about the event’s requirements, including the governing rules and regulations. Traffic is closed for two hours except for the emergency vehicles that provide essential services such as ambulances. Toilets are available throughout the course making the race easy for the participants.

Results are always published on the websites, and certificates are awarded to marathon participants to appreciate them for being part of the noble activity. During the race, participants challenged with finding accommodation always reach out for help from the organizers who are significantly committed to the marathon’s success.

The Buller Gorge marathon 2021 New Zealand is scheduled to be held on the 13th of February, 2021. It will feature four activities: the marathon, the half marathon, the four-person relay, and a 10kilometeres marathon, a new Buller Heritage.

Previous participants in the marathon have expressed great appreciation to the organizers for making the event exciting and comfortable. There are mile-markers, plenty of water and fresh drinks throughout the trail and an after-race stuff tent ridding the runners of excess weight in carrying necessary items such as water. The temperatures are favouring in addition to the friendliest participants that encourage each other to finish the run.

The Buller Gorge Marathon highlights a sense of community among the organizers and the participants. It is one of the must-do activities when in New Zealand around its scheduled time. It is a great way to interact with the locals and enjoy the sense of belonging to a community.
